Expertise and Research Interests

The objective of research in this laboratory is to understand the role of individual genes in complex physiological systems characterized by gene-gene and gene-environment interactions. The model system used is lipid metabolism and its contribution to atherosclerosis. The particular focus is on the role of DNA variation in the loci coding for 7-alpha hydroxylase, apolipoproteins B and E, and apolipoprotein (A) in contributingto inter-individual variation in lipid levels. The effects of these genes on fasting lipid levels and on various diets are considered. In addition, these investigators are examining the role of these genes in determining the response of lipid levels to a standard meal. As a tool used to follow targeted genes as they segregate among related individuals, this laboratory also has experience in typing and characterizing DNA variation in highly repetitive and polymorphic VNTR loci. One valuable application of such information DNA markers is genetic linkage analysis. The laboratory has several linkage projects to localize genes contributing to hypertension, diabetes, and gallbladder disease.
