Expertise and Research Interests

Our laboratory focuses on cellular immune responses to Herpes viridae and poxivurses that are infectious for humans, and mechanisms of T-cell homing to skin. HSV- and vaccinia-encoded antigens and epitopes have been identified using expression cloning. The spatial localization of antigen-specific T-cells has been studied using biopsies of genital herpes lesions. In collaboration, detailed structure-function studies of HSV epitopes have been performed for epitopes recognized by HLA alleles of interest in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. The diversity and persistence of HSV-specific responses at the clonal level have been studied with clone-specific nucleic acid probes recognizing unique rearranged TCR cDNA sequences. Inhibition of antigen presentation and apoptosis by HSV infection has also been studied as a modulatory influence on the immune response to HSV. Other studies have addressed the mode of transmission and immune response to HHV-8. Antiviral drug sensitivity testing for HSV has been performed and published in support of several drug trials.
