Qualifications

D.M.Sc., University of Copenhagen, 1978.
M.D., University of Copenhagen, 1974.

Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Grandjean has long-term experience in environmental epidemiology and has contributed to the development and validation of various biomarkers and clinical tests of early dysfunctions, mainly in regard to the nervous system. Research efforts have focused on long-term health implications of exposures to environmental chemicals, including lead, methylmercury, nickel, and organohalogen compounds. Current studies emphasize the significance of prenatal exposures for the development of the nervous system, the cardiovascular system, and immune functions in children, and possible hormone-disrupting effects of pesticides and persistent halogenated hydrocarbons. The implications of research in this area are explored in the light of the precautionary pronciple.

Other Expertise

Dr. Grandjean has served as Vice-Dean and Institute Chairman at Odense University and as member of the Danish Medical Research Council. He is founding editor of the web-based journal Environmental Health (http://www.ehjournal.net) and has served as European Editor of the Archives of Environmental Health and is currently a member of editorial boards of ten scientific journals. He has been elected Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and was elected to the Board of Collegium Ramazzini in 2005. Past committee memberships include the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency SAB/SAP Endocrine Disruptor Screening Program Subcommittee, the Danish Committee on Scientific Dishonesty, the Panel on Contaminants of the European Food Safety Authority, and the chair of the Commission on Toxicology of IUPAC, and the Danish Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Research, as well as advisory tasks for several international organizations.

Future Research

Early human development is particularly vulnerable to adverse effects of environmental chemicals, especially neurotoxicants. These issues will be explored in prospective studies of birth cohorts with well defined exposures to specific chemicals, including methylmercury, PCBs, pesticides, and endocrine disruptors.

Industrial Relevance

The research undertaken is of key interest with regard to setting exposure limits and preventing adverse health effects from industrial exposures and emissions.
