Expertise and Research Interests

Anastasios Kaburakis is an Assistant Professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, School of Education, Department of Kinesiology. His previous academic appointments included: Visiting Professor at Indiana University Bloomington, member of the Sport Management Faculty in the Department of Kinesiology, School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation, and Adjunct Professor at Washington University Law School in St. Louis. He earned his law degree from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and practiced law licensed through the Thessaloniki Bar Association. While in Greece, he taught and coached basketball at the American High School and College of Thessaloniki, Anatolia College, also coaching at Aris Basketball Club (Junior Men) and the National Teams of Greece (Cadettes and Junior Women) through the Greek Basketball Federation.

He completed his PhD in Sport Management with a Minor in Strategy from the Department of Management in the Kelley School of Business in the Fall of 2005, and his doctoral dissertation 'NCAA DI Amateurism and International Prospective Student-Athletes - The professionalization threshold' dealt with NCAA policy, U.S. Constitutional Law, and International Sport Governing Bodies. He has presented his research at the National Association for Athletics Compliance, Sport Lawyers Association, International Association for Sport Law, Sport and Recreation Law Association, European Association for Sport Management, North American Society for Sport Management, and related conferences. He has delivered several Continuing Legal Education sessions for State Bar Associations. Portions of his work have been published in the American Bar Association's Entertainment and Sport Lawyer, International Journal of Sport Management, Sport Marketing Quarterly, Journal of Legal Aspects of Sport, International Journal of Sport Communication, International Sport Law Journal, International Journal of Sport Management and Marketing, and other international policy and law reviews. At present he is the Director of the Sport Management Graduate Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, teaching courses in Administrative Theory and Practice in Sport, Development and Governance of World Sport, Legal Issues in Sport, Structure and Policies of Intercollegiate and Interscholastic Sport, Risk Management, Strategic Management in the Sport Industry, Research Methods in Sport Management, and Issues in Athletics and Education.
