Expertise and Research Interests

Research activities focus on novel imaging techniques for breast cancer detection and diagnosis, and on methods to enhance tissue differences on ultrasound using contrast agents. We are currently interested in three different approaches to breast cancer imaging: ultrasound computed tomography, digital x-ray mammography and ultrasound computer-aided diagnosis. We developed a diffraction tomography system using large-scale (20 cm diameter) toroidal arrays of 512 and 1024 transducer elements that measure the entire scatter field around the breast. Research is focused on development of reconstruction algorithms and quantitative maps of breast tissue properties. Our work in ultrasound contrast agents includes the development of materials and measurement techniques to enhance sensitivity to blood flow, to target breast cancer and to detect perfusion abnormalities. We are involved in design and development of a number of special solid state sensors for direct high-resolution x-ray imaging for mammography, general radiography and fluoroscopy. We produced the first full-field (18x24 cm) digital x-ray mammograms which have resolution of 60 microns. This effort includes work on image quality requirements, x-ray beam filtering and optimization, breast dosimetry, and image display. Acoustical holography is a technique involving production of acoustic interference patterns using transmission ultrasound and reconstructing a real-time image using optical processing. It provides dynamic transmission images with very large fields of view that may be useful for biopsy guidance, tumor ablation and musculoskeletal imaging.
