Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Pérez has relevant skills in the areas of management of large data sets, study design, data analysis plan, statistical methods and statistical analysis. Also, she has taught medical and statistician students, as well as graduate and undergraduate students in various subject areas. She has experience in the development, assessment, and application of specific organizational and educational interventions used for collaborative clinical trials.

Dr. Pérez has conducted research using multiple imputation techniques and research estimating of the required sample size in clinical research. Dr Pérez is the principal author of a software which allow researches to calculate the require sample size in their clinical protocols. This software is called 'Tamaño de la Muestra' and is available in Spanish only.

Currently, Dr. Pérez is the Principal investigator of the Statsitical and Economic Analysis Core of the EXPORT grant funded by NIH as well as for the project "Missing Data Imputation at the Survey of Industrial Research and Development" funded by ASA/NSF.

Dr. Pérez has been the principal investigator in several past projects as 'Comparison of several imputation techniques to quantify the severity of disease in admitted patients to intensive care units in Colombia', 'Modeling and simulation of sample size in some health research designs', 'Tamaño de la muestra: a computer program to estimate the required sample size and power in clinical research', 'Longitudinal effects on estimates after imputation at the survey of graduate students and postdoctorates in science and engineering','On the pursuit of Biostatistics Professionals', 'Missing data analysis on the science resource statistics surveys', and 'Diabetes and tuberculosis: the strength of their association and the economic impact in the Lower Rio Grande Valley'.

Dr. Perez has been also a co-investigator in several projects as: 'Assessment of intensive care in Colombia: Health Service, Technology and Quality Evaluation', 'Improvement of parental antibiotic use in a university hospital in Colombia', 'Latin american migraine study (LAMS): a Cross sectional survey of migraine with and without aura, as well as tension type headache in men and women over 15 years of age who lived in the major areas of the participating Latin American countries', the 'WPA/INCLEN International collaborative project on depression in primary care. Development, assessment and application of clinic specific organizational and education interventions for improving the recognition and management of depression in primary care settings in developing countries', 'Emerging MDR Tuberculosis Across the US/Mexico border' and 'Interrelationships of Hormones, Diet, Body Size and Breast Cancer among Hispanic Women' .

Dr. Perez acted as the project manager for a large clinical trial on stomach cancer in Colombia titled 'A chemoprevention trial among persons at high risk of stomach cancer in the Andes Mountains of Colombia'. She coordinated with field team to assure protocol procedures followed and with New Orleans team to design and implement statistical analyses. She advised on and designed statistical procedures for New Orleans team's research on stomach cancer and lifestyle/genetic factors. She has acted as a consultant with other Louisiana State University Medical Center faculty members regarding experimental design and statistical analyses. Also she has acted as a consultant with 'Air pollution and acute respiratory illness in Bogotá'.

Research interests: statistical methods suited to epidemiological research; imputation techniques; design, conduct and analysis of multicenter clinical trials; logistic regression analysis; sample size estimation and modeling strategies.
