Expertise and Research Interests

Inventor and originator of Artificial Cells including blood substitutes. (Chang, Science 1964) that has led to a number of clinical and biotechnological applications. Thus, his basic research on blood substitutes (Since Chang, Science 1964 to present) has led to polyhemoglobin that is now well into Phase III clinical trials. His group is developing 2nd (PolyHb-SOD-CAT, Nature Biotechnology 1998) and 3rd (Biodegradable Hb-enzyme nanocapsules) generations blood substitutes His approach to Hemoperfusionis now a routine treatment for acute poisoning worldwide and is part of an artificial liver now in clinical trial in the U.S. His research on artificial cells in enzyme therapy (since Chang et al Nature 1968, Chang Nature 1972 ) is being developed for clinical trial for phenylketonuria. His 'cell encapsulation' approach is being developed world-wide for diabetes, liver failure, kidney failure, genetic diseases, endocrine diseases etc. His group is also studying artificial cells containing genetically engineered cells for oral therapy in uremia (Satya & Chang Nature Medicine 1996, Chang, Nature Medicine 1997). Artificial cell is also used for drug delivery. For more details please see under internet www url: http://www.artcell.mcgill.ca
