Expertise and Research Interests

Rohit Bakshi, M.D., F.A.A.N., is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Radiology at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He is Director of the Laboratory for Neuroimaging Research at the Partners Multiple Sclerosis Center. He has built a research program involving quantitative MRI in MS and is currently Principal Investigator on an R01 grant from the National Institutes of Health focusing on gray matter disease in MS. His work has also been funded by the National Science Foundation and National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

He is a Buffalo native and graduate of Cornell University. As an Alpha Omega Alpha scholar, he completed a one-year neuroscience research fellowship with Dr. Alan Faden at the University of California, San Francisco. He served a one-year internship at the Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School followed by a neurology residency at the University of California, Los Angeles, where he performed neuroimaging research with Dr. John Mazziotta. He then completed a neuroimaging fellowship at the Dent Neurologic Institute. He previously served as Neurology Residency Program Director and Neuroimaging Fellowship Program Director at the University at Buffalo-SUNY.

He received the 1998 William H. Oldendorf Award for neuroimaging research. He is a member of the American Neurological Association, a Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, and a Study Section reviewer for the National Institutes of Health. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Neuroimaging and as Associate Editor of the journal Neurotherapeutics. He is the Treasurer of the American Society for Experimental NeuroTherapeutics, Past Chair of the Neuroimaging Section of the American Academy of Neurology, and a Past President of the American Society of Neuroimaging.

Dr. Bakshi has delivered more than 140 invited academic lectures and has authored more than 170 peer reviewed articles.

He is willing to contribute to internet-based and other electronic educational efforts. Dr. Bakshi is an expert lecturer on MRI and is willing to travel to give lectures on the neuroimaging applications of MRI.

Future Research

Dr. Bakshi is interested in collaborating on topics such as clincal and neuroimaging correlation in neurologic diseases, especially multiple sclerosis. Dr. Bakshi is also interested in applying computer-assisted methodologies to the analysis of MRI findings in the brain and spinal cord.

Industrial Relevance

Dr. Bakshi also participates in investigator initiated clinical research using neuroimaging outcome measures. Dr. Bakshi participates on Data and Safety Monitoring Committees for clinical trials. He performs grant reviews for the National Institutes of Health and other funding agencies.
