Qualifications

M.D., University of California, SanDiego Sch Medicine 306040, 1974.

Expertise and Research Interests

My research interests include the following:airway reactivity during the perioperative period;the delivery of bronchodilators to the patient whose trachea is intubated;complications of tracheal intubation;the pulmonary vascular system. The questions I am addressing include the following:What are the effects of different anesthetic induction agents on the bronchial response to tracheal intubation?Do inhaled bronchodilators supplement the bronchodilating effect of isoflurane? What are the relative resistances of different size tracheostomy tubes with and without fenestration?I have had a long-standing interest in the pulmonary vascular bed and reperfusion lung injury. Currently, I am involved in a collaborative study with Steven Deem, M.D. on the effects of differing hematocrits on gas exchange in the face of major interpulmonary shunt.
