QualificationsPh.D., University of Arizona, Spanish, 1982. M.A., University of Arizona, Spanish, 1976. B.A., University of Arizona, Spanish, 1973. Expertise and Research InterestsDuring the last few years, I have been working on a book manuscript on contemporary Latin American socio-political poetry. It contains a theoretical model for analysis, a chapter on the history of socio-political poetry and specific studies on general characteristics based on the work of Otto Rene Castillo, Pedro Shimose and Roberto Fernandez Retamar. I have spent a year studying contemporary women poets of Mexico. As a result I have written a long article under consideration in Mexico City by LiteraturaMexicana. I have also developed my research interest in Chicano/a literature particularly Chicana poets. This is an interest that I hope to continue to develop by studying the work of Gloria Anzaldua. I am presently working as co-editor for a special issue on Chicano/a studies for Cuadernos Americanos (Mexico City). Future plans include an in-depth study of women's socio-political poetry in Latin America. As a Chcana poet I have been successful in the publication of two poetry collections and my work hasbeen included in anthologies and journals in the United States and Spain.Cross-departmental interests:Latin American studies; cross-cultural criticism; international studies; Chicano/a literature; women's studeiesForeign interests:Latin America; Mexico; Caribbean Other ExpertiseChicano/a Literature and Culture; Latin American Literature and Culture; Literary Theory and Criticism; Chicana Writers and Intellectual History; Latin American Women Writers; Latin American Culture and Civilization; Chicano/a Poetry; Socio-political Poetry in Latin America;Rockefeller Regional Scholar, University of Arizona, 1991I have had experience with the following funding agencies: Social Sciences Foundation(F) KeywordsCOS Keywords:Cultural Activities, Latin American History, Literary Criticism, Nonfictional Literature, Poetic Language or Literature, Poetry.Additional Terms:Chicano/a Literature, Cultural Activities, Discourse Theory, Folk & Ethnic Arts, Latin American Feminist Theory, Latin American History, Literary Criticism, Literature, Mentee, Non-fiction Literature, Poetry, Poetry, Spanish Literature.Languages(Reading, Writing, Speaking)English: (Fluent, Fluent, Fluent) Spanish: (Fluent, Fluent, Fluent) Portuguese: (Fluent, Functional, Functional) MembershipsAmerican Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese Latin American Studies Association Modern Language Association of America National Association for Chicano Studies (NACS) Pacific Coast Council on Latin American Studies Southwest Council on Latin American Studies Previous Positions1984-1987, Kent Denver Country Day School, Teacher 1983-1984, University of Colorado, Colorado Springs, Assistant Professor 1982, University of Colorado, Denver, Instructor 1981-1982, University of Denver, Instructor 1974-1978, University of Arizona, Teaching Assistant Publications
