Expertise and Research Interests

Research that furthers understanding of behavioral and social functioning at the level of the individual, small group, institution, or community has to be translated into effective intervention strategies to contribute to cancer prevention and control. The Institute of Medicine is releasing a report on promoting health, Intervention Strategies from Social and Behavioral Sciences (National Academy Press, forthcoming Brian D. Smedley and S. Leonard Syme, Editors), that has important relevance to training for interventions in cancer prevention and control. The report provides several recommendations particularly relevant to new training and research in cancer prevention and control: use multiple approaches (e.g., education, social support, laws, incentives, behavior change programs) and address multiple levels of influence simultaneously (i.e., individual, families, communities, nations); take account of the special needs of target groups; take a long range perspective on health outcomes, as changes often take many years to become established; and involve a variety of sectors in our society that have not traditionally been associated with health promotion efforts, including law, business, education, social services, and the media. All are central to new and renewed efforts to prevent cancer and improve cancer treatment outcomes.

I am interested in exploring the effects of community and of new technologies (including genetic testing and new communication technologies) on individuals' and communities' health outcomes, on primary and secondary prevention outcomes, and on quality of life. All of my current projects relate to health behavior change and health related outcomes change. I currently have three ongoing, randomized trials to improve health behaviors and health-related quality of life for individuals and organizations using population-based samples. Each tests a different method or model of health communications to improve target behaviors and health measures.
