Expertise and Research Interests

My research and experience includes the study of regional lung function and lung imaging, lung mechanics, and anesthesia monitoring and breathing systems. My current ongoing research involves the application of functional lung imaging techniques to measure regional lung ventilation, perfusion, mechanical properties, airway and pulmonary vessel dimensions, and lung and chest wall configuration. The combination of these methods allows the non-invasive characterization of many important aspects of regional lung function in intact animals, which in turn will allow the investigation of heterogeneous pulmonary disease processes such as ARDS, emphysema, pulmonary embolism and others. Current applications include studies of animal models of ARDS and RDS, surfactant deficiency and exogenous surfactant, and functional imaging of sinus ventilation. Most recently, we have utilized novel high throughput microarray genomic methods to characterize regional cellular responses to mechanical stress in models of acute lung injury.

Our research efforts are enriched by several important collaborations. We are collaborators in an NIH Biomedical Research Partnership 'Image and model analysis of lung diseases', led by Dr. Eric Hoffman at the University of Iowa, in which novel techniques for functional lung imaging are developed and validated. In addition, we collaborate closely with membersof the Pulmonary Division of the Dept. of Medicine at Johns Hopkins, including projects with the HopGene CardioPulmonary Program in Genomic Applications and the newly funded NIH SCCOR in Acute Lung Injury.

Additional areas of interest and expertise include mechanical ventilation and high frequency oscillatory ventilation, anesthesia machines and breathing circuits, clinical monitoring systems, and anesthesia for thoracic surgical procedures.
