QualificationsPh.D., University of Virginia, Biology, 1984. A.B., Dartmouth College, Biology, 1977. Expertise and Research InterestsOur research focuses on the physiology of cyanobacteria and bacterial stress responses. The influence of trace metal nutrition and photosynthetic performance is a current interest, along with understanding protein-protein interactions in photosynthetic electron transport. Other ExpertiseMuch of our work is centered on the development of stress-responsive cyanobacterial bioreporters. Such strain produce a luminescent signal which can be viewed as a proxy for the physiological status of the endemic phytoplankton in natural environments. Future ResearchOur work will continue to focus on development of multichannel , (GFP, Lux, Luc) bioreporter strains having broad dynamic range in the detection of trace metals, N and P in natural environments. Expanding the technology to include diatoms is a future goal.
