A.B., Dartmouth College, Biology, 1977.

Expertise and Research Interests

Our research focuses on the physiology of cyanobacteria and bacterial stress responses. The influence of trace metal nutrition and photosynthetic performance is a current interest, along with understanding protein-protein interactions in photosynthetic electron transport.

Other Expertise

Much of our work is centered on the development of stress-responsive cyanobacterial bioreporters. Such strain produce a luminescent signal which can be viewed as a proxy for the physiological status of the endemic phytoplankton in natural environments.

Future Research

Our work will continue to focus on development of multichannel , (GFP, Lux, Luc) bioreporter strains having broad dynamic range in the detection of trace metals, N and P in natural environments. Expanding the technology to include diatoms is a future goal.
