Expertise and Research Interests

Active research component:
Archaeological survey in southern Portugal (Alentejo region). The focus fo the project is refining our knowledge of Middle Palaeolithic land-use patterns in Portugal. Methodologically, the project will make use of the predictive modeling capacity of GIS. Palaeoethology as a tool in designing predictive models of land-use.
Landscape as a factor in the social organisation of Neanderthals. Hominid dispersals during the Palaeolithic. The analysis of faunal remains and the environmental context of Middle Palaeolithic occupations in the Old World.

On-going interests:
Use of anthropological theory on hunter-gatherer social organization for developing models of prehistoric settlement and mobility patterns; palaeoenvironmental reconstructions using faunal remains; processes of bone growth and development as recorders of individual health and life-histories.

Theoretical interests:
Evolutionary ecology/human ecology.

Other Expertise

Archaeozoology
Bone growth and histology
Late Pleistocene equid systematics and palaeoethology

Future Research

I am leading a new research cluster that intends to model Lower Palaeolithic hominid dispersal patterns.
I am also currently designing research to examine human wayfinding skills with an aim to understanding the impact of wayfinding strategies on hominid dispersals.
