B.A., Fordham University, Greek, Latin, 1968.

Expertise and Research Interests

Classical philologist, specializing in Greek and Latin epic/hexameter poetry and drama (the Homeric poems, Athenian drama, Roman comedy, and narrative poetry of Virgil and Ovid) and ancient religion. Current Hellenist interests are the Odyssey, Sophocles and Euripides, and the comic playwright Aristophanes. I am investigating representations of divine and heroic myth on Greek painted vases as have studied ithem at museums in the USA, Canada, Australia and twelve European countries, in publications, and by internet.

My interests also include comparative literatures, topics in medieval and modern literature (examples: Dante's narrative technique; Henrik Ibsen's invention, dramaturgy, and influence; Derek Walcott's plays and narrative poems; contemporary US theater), and most recently numismatics, both ancient (Roman) and modern (19-20th century coinage as expression of ideology and nationalism) and the political and cultural history of the German states and Germany.

I am also a semiprofessional scholar of wine, with specialties in Germany (all thirteen regions of which I have visited, though Mosel-Saar-Ruwer is 'home' base), French Alsace, and Austria, and have many personal contacts, some nearly thirty years standing, in those places.

Other Expertise

Academic Experience:
Twenty two trips to European wine country and voluminous correspondence with producers of German, Austrian, and Alsace wine (I have tasted over 20,000 wines and have visited wineries in the U.S.--California, Washington, Idaho, New Mexico, Colorado--as well as more than thirty in Austria, over sixty in Alsace, and nearly two hundred in all of Germany's viticultural regions).

Experience with the following funding agencies: ACLS, Colo Endowment for the Humanities, NEH, Ridgefield Foundation, DAAD,IREX; success with the first four of these.

Business Experience:
Paid translations from and (scientific) to Latin. I have consulted for wine shops and restaurants on selection and service of wine, and have made matches between foreign suppliers and USimporters, distributors, and licensees. Have informally advised producers in Europeon the US market for fine wine.

Future Research

Ancient, medieval, and modern LITERATURE, DRAMA. Ancient religion and iconography. Ancient and modern nationalism, focusing on GERMANY and with particular emphasis on contemporary representation of that nation's (and pre-nation's) past cultural and political history as presented in MUSEUMS. Evolution of wine styles and regulations.

Industrial Relevance

Scientific Latin. Connections in international wine production and trade.
