Expertise and Research Interests

My primary interest is research on hemostasis and thrombosis. Hemostasis is a balance between factors that promote thrombus formation (the coagulation system, platelets), those that block thrombus formation (inhibitors such as antithrombin III or proteinC/S) and those that promote removal of thrombi (fibrinolysis).
Current projects in my laboratory include: 1) Regulation of thrombin generation, fibrin formation and fibrin removal from the vascular system. This project utilizes a combination of hemostatic marker measurements in humans to evaluate the effects of adrenergic agonists, exercise, endurance training, cardiopulmonary bypass and other stimuli on hemostasis in combination with a kinetic model of the circulatory regulation of hemostasis, 2) new assays for the detection of hemostatic and thrombotic abnormalities: evaluationof fibrinolytic assays and thrombotic markers for assessing the risk of arterial thrombosis (myocardial infarction), post-operative venous thrombosis, and hemorrhage during and after surgical procedures (particularly cardiopulmonary bypass). Industrial Relevance

Modeling of the hemostatic system using a computer simulation of the circulatory system can be used in the development of new drugs relating to the hemostasis. This type of modeling can be used to estimate the effect of different doses and treatment schedules on human hemostasis prior to clinical trials.
