Michigan State University College of Agriculture & Natural Resources IR-4 North Central Research Center Regional Quality Assurance Coordinator Faculty/Academic Specialist (Continuous)Appointed: 2000 | |
QualificationsPh.D., University of Florida, Entomology & Nematology, 1996. M.S., Zhejiang Agriculture University, Entomology, 1986. B.S., Zhejiang Agriculture University, Plant Protection, 1983. Expertise and Research InterestsManage the Quality Assurance Unit (QAU) and provide GLP/QA supervision to the MSU IR-4 Leader Laboratory, NDSU IR-4 Satellite Laboratory, and field research centers/sites at MSU, NDSU, SDSU, OSU, Univ. of Wisconsin, Univ. of Nebraska, and USDA-ARS. IR-4 is funded by USDA to provide pesticide residue and other data to EPA in support of pesticide food use tolerances that will eventually yield new pest management solutions for minor crop growers. Minor crops include most fruits and nuts, vegetables, herbs, spices, and ornamentals and are very important in Michigan where they make up 50% or more of the crops grown. Nationally, minor crops account for $40 billion out of $98 billion of value for all crops. Conduct field and lab in-life critical phase inspections and data audits to annually 120 field residue trials and 100 lab residue tests generating over 200 new pesticide tolerances used for food safety. Provide training and inspections for approximately 40 field and laboratory research scientists in the 12 regional states to meet the requirements set forth by EPA in federal regulations 40 CFR Part 160. Coordinate Quality Assurance Officers at North Dakota State University and University of Wisconsin plus private QA consultants. Additionally, collaborate with cooperators in Canada and Mexico on OECD GLP in various research projects aiming to establish the pesticide residue tolerances in food as required by NAFTA. Provide consultancy on import tolerances of pesticide residue in/on agricultural products in international trades. Other Expertise- Investigated the ecology, biological control, and field management of diseases and nematodes on various crops - Consulted on field management of insect pests, diseases, and nematodes
Future Research- Manage quality assurance in agrochemical, pharmaceutical, and animal studies - Conduct research in ecology, spatial-temporal modeling, and intergrated management of root-knot, cyst, and root-lesion nematodes - Develop biological control of root-knot nematodes using a bacterial parasite Pasteuria penetrans
Industrial RelevanceAgrochemical, pharmaceutical, consultant firms, and general agricultural commodity groups
