QualificationsPh.D., University of Illinois at Chicago, Nursing Science, 1992. M.S., Rush University Medical Center, Psychiatric Nursing, 1978. A.S., College of Dupage, Nursing Science, 1977. B.S., University of Oklahoma, Special Education, 1970. Expertise and Research InterestsMy research has been focused on developing mathematical methods to study complex processes as they change over time. My contribution to the field has been the 'diamond of opposites,' a tool that can illuminate the presence of contradictions in processesthat are not detected by Likert type scales. Based on a process theory framework, and nonlinear dynamics, the 'diamond of opposites' measurement provides quantitative measures and visual graphs of changes in processes over time, based on the opposite forces involved in them.
Ihave applied these methods to:
1. Analyze approach and avoidance patterns of abused children through longitudinal analysis of the stories these children produce in therapeutic puppet theatre groups.
2. Identify interpersonal issues and track the process of change in relationships of the participants in adult psychodrama groups.
3. Depict how emotional state and heart and brain activity reciprocally affect one another.
Recently I have used the 'diamond of opposites' tool to identify learning needs of nursing students as they progress toward meeting clinical course objectives. Other ExpertiseCurrent Certifications:

Fellow, American Society of Psychodrama, Sociometry and Group Psychotherapy
I view myself as a nursing practitioner, educator and researcher with a Process Theory approach with an emphasis on creative processes. Over the years, I have been teaching nursing 'in action' through spontaneous enactment of clinical stories based on the experiences of participants to explore and develop alternative interventions.
Recently I have been adapting the power of psychodramatic techniques, the power of story, and the power of the world wide web to create learning activities for nurses that focus, motivate and engage adult learners to participate in their own education.
My passion is constructing innovative teaching-learning strategies to arouse curiosity, facilitate interaction and engender creativity.
I am also active in developing mathematical methods for pattern recognition in time series data. Future ResearchMy research focus continues to shift. 'Measuring Co-existing Opposites', my doctoral thesis (1992) led to the development of the method of the 'diamond of opposites' to assess change in patterns of processes based on the opposites within. I'm involved in developing methods to study creativity (novelty and variability in processes represented by time series data.
Once this graphical method was perfected, I began using it to evaluate changes in relationships related to psychodrama psychotherapy for both adults and children.
The shift now is toward using the diamond of opposites for evaluation of learning and learning strategies in the educational arena--a natural twist on an old theme.
In the cycle of things, my research seems dormant. My roles of researcher and psychodrama therapist are in hibernation, while my educator role is emerging and flourishing. These roles will surely awaken again, in their own good time. Industrial RelevanceI wonder about the industrial application of my research. I have ideas, vision and skills relevant to online education, psychotherapy and the mathematical recognition of creative patterns. Do these ideas have industrial application? I don't know.
