Expertise and Research Interests
Douglas Conrad has been a member of the faculty in the University of Washington's Department of Health Services, in the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, since 1977 and currently serves as Professor of Health Services, Adjunct Professor of Business and Economics, and Co-Director of the Center for Health Management Research (CHMR), a National Science Foundation-sponsored Industry-University Cooperative Research Center from 1991 - 2006 -- the only such IUCRC focusing on health services. The Center is a consortium of 17 research universities and 13 health systems in North America. Beginning in August 2006, CHMR became a program of the Health Research and Educational Trust, the research affiliate of the American Hospital Association. His principal faculty affiliations are in the Master of Health Administration Program and the PhD program in Health Services. He holds an MHA (1973) degree from the University of Washington, and an MBA (1976) and PhD (1978, Economics and Finance) from the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago. His fields of specialization in economics are industrial organization, risk and insurance, and corporate finance.
In October of 2002, Dr. Conrad spearheaded a conference, sponsored by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and the California Healthcare Foundation, that explored the effect of incentives, organization factors, and market conditions on patient care quality and costs. He is currently engaged in research on the effects of the Group Health Cooperative Access Initiative, pay for performance, effects on utilization and cost of insurance benefits for complementary and alternative medicine, and the impact of the Washington State Diabetes Collaborative on health and economic outcomes. Dr. Conrad has authored roughly 80 peer-reviewed articles and 2 books, and previously served as Commissioner (Chair, 1990-1991) of the Accrediting Commission on Education in Health Services Administration (1986-1991). His most recent book, Managed Care Contracting: Concepts and Applications for the Health Care Executive, was published by Health Administration Press of the American College of Health Care Executives in May 1996. He was the Editor of Frontiers of Health Services Management from 1988-1994, and in June 1996 he was named an AHSR Fellow by the Board of the Association for Health Services Research in recognition of his work in health services research. He currently serves on the Editorial Board of Health Services Research. He is a member of Group Health Cooperative's Strategic Planning and Finance Committee.

He was Faculty Course Director (with Austin Ross) of the October- November 1995 UW executive education program: 'Managing Change, Quality, and Cost in Health Care: The New Standard in Leadership Development.'. Mr. Conrad has authored 72 peer-reviewed articles and 2 books, and previously served as Commissioner (Chair, 1990-1991) of the Accrediting Commission on Education in Health Services Administration (1986-1991). He was the Editor of Frontiers of Health Services Management from 1988-1994. In June 1996he was named an AHSR Fellow by the Board of the Association for Health Services Research in recognition of his work in health services research. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journal, Health Services research. He is a member of the National Advisory Committee of the Rewarding Results Demonstration Program (2002-2005) sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and California Health Care Foundation. Mr. Conrad recently completed 4 years of service on the Health Systems Research Study Section of th Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ).
Future Research
Future research projects include analysis of the formation of physician practice organizations and nationwide empirical study of the effects of financial incentives on quality of health services.
Industrial Relevance
Mr. Conrad's work is primarily applied to medical group practices, HMOs and health plans, hospitals, and health systems.
