Expertise and Research Interests

The Molecular Pathogenesis Laboratory, Department of Animal Science, Michigan State University is dedicated to understanding the interactions between bacterial and viral pathogens and the host that lead to disease. Current pathogens of focus are M. paratuberculosis or Johne's disease in cattle and the closely related M. avium. Our research is based on the premise that understanding mechanisms of pathogen-cell interactions will lead to better vaccines and control mechanisms, a more through understanding of immunity and immunization, and factors affecting genetic susceptability/resistance to disease. In addition to whole animal work, we also are investigating how mycoabcteria affect their chosen host cell, the macrophage. Current studies utilize functional genomics to disect pathways of macrophage activation that are suppressed following uptake of mycobacteria.

Commonly used technologies in the laboratory are subtractive hybridization/cloning, DNA sequence analysis, cDNA and oligonucleotide microarray analysis, Q-RT-PCR, immunochemical staining, cell culture, and most basic molecular biological techniques.

Other Expertise

1996 to 1999-
Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Origen, Inc. A lansing Michigan based biotechnology company dedicated to development of novel veterinary vaccines, molecular diagnostics and vaccine production systems. Responsible for overseeing research and development efforts, new business development and active laboratory research on vaccine development projects. Primary target markets were swine and cattle diseases.

Future Research

Our recent work has demonstrated that it is possible to diagnose infections in cattle via a functional genomics approach. This work will be expanded over the next few years to include other viral, parasitic, and bacterial diseases. In addiiton, we will begin investigating the possibility of "metabolic profiling" using a similar functional genomics approach.
