QualificationsPh.D., University of Michigan, Epidemiologic Sciences, 1980. M.S., Michigan State University, Biochemistry, 1975. B.A., University of Rochester, Chemistry, 1974. Expertise and Research InterestsMy research is in the area of viral hepatitis, both laboratory and field based. Previous studies have included clinical trials of hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines and laboratory validation of new immunodiagnostic kits for hepatitis A and B. A major area of research has been in the hemophilic community where we evaluated interactions between hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, and HIV infection in co-infected individuals as well as the natural history of HCV disease. In addition, other on-going research projects include development of a combined enzyme immunoassay for the detection of antibodies to hepatitis C and HIV and development of an immune complex dissociation assay capable of detecting anti-HCV antibodies in antibody negative/PCR positive individuals. In the future, I plan on setting up a study looking at transmission of hepatitis C virus in households with a hemophilic patient and setting up PCR laboratory at the School of Public Health.
Another area of interest is that of immune response to vaccination in the elderly and the effect of estrogen on this response. We are currently planning a study of HAV vaccine in elderly women who are on hormone replacement therapy and will compare their response to a set of women not on estrogen.
