QualificationsAffilitate Member, Joanna Briggs Institute- Royal Adelaide Hospital, Evidence Based Practice, 2006. Affiliate Scientist, Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis, Center for Enhancing Quality of Life, 2003. Ed.D., University of Southern California, Medical and Professional Education, 1989. M.A., San Diego State University, Higher Education and Health Science, 1980. B.S., University of Central Florida, Respiratory Therapy, 1974. Expertise and Research InterestsDr Cullen actively works in the following areas:
Long Term Oxygen Therapy: Current research is related to long-term oxygen therapy (LTOT), compliance/adherence with LTOT, quality of life and LTOT, appropriateness of prescription for LTOT, reimbursement for oxygen therapy and conditions that require LTOT such as COPD, interstitial lung disease and asthma. Clinical evaluation for long-term oxygen therapy and health care services to those receiving long-term oxygen therapies are areas of expertise.
Breathlessness and Dyspnea: Current research related to measures of breathlessness or dyspnea across populations or conditions. Dyspnea scales or subscales in functional assessment or quality of life measures and as a means of assessment and evaluation for therapy efficacy and effectiveness. Dyspnea as related to activities of daily living, disability and long-term oxygen therapy. Intervention and therapy related to dyspnea, in particular, deep breathing or breathing techniques.
Nursing Education: Professional education and curriculum development. Credentialing as related to medical specialties.
Mentoring: Faculty development, research on mentoring processes, mentoring diverse populations and minorities, mentoring for leadership, mentoring graduate students, mentoring programs.
Evidence Based Practice: Evidence-based practice and teaching evidence-based practice.
Tobacco: Tobacco as related to curriculum, web-based instruction for health professionals and credentialing.
Respiratory Therapy: Respiratory therapy as related to instruction, teaching, outcomes, curriculum, testing and credentialing. Other ExpertiseClinical expertise for assessment, evalution, and outcomes for patients that are prescribed oxygen therapy at home. Clinical expert for dyspnea evalution and therapy appropriate to treat shortness of breath due to impairment or disability. I am interested in evidence based practice related to long term oxygen therapy. Future ResearchMy future research is related to compliance/adherence, evaluation and treatment for those who experience shortness of breath, require long term oxygen therapy or other similar respiratory services. Oxygen therapy and breathing exercies as they relate to quality of life and functional assessment as it can be connected to technology is a future focus. For example, my future research agenda includes outcome assessment and interventions for patients short of breath or on long-term oxygen therapy via high-tech wireless and web-based solutions.
I am also an educational expert as realted to curriulum and instruction, teaching evidence-based practice, and the inclusion of technology to improve learning outcomes. Industrial RelevanceMy research interests are relevant for home oxygen therapy manufacturers, and in particular, those interested in assessment and outcome measures for patients receiving oxygen. Generally speaking, monitoring of patients on oxygen for adherence, appropriateness of therapy/effectiveness or prescription is an undeveloped area ripe for exploration.
This is also relevent to industries who pay for or provide services related to dyspneic conditions or home oxygen therapy to investigate better outcome management and enhance quality of life for patients.
