Expertise and Research Interests

The main focus of my research is the hemodynamic and metabolic effects of different cerebrovascular diseases on the brain, as well as the effects of medical or endovascular treatment of these disorders on cerebral blood flow, autoregulatory vasodilation,and oxygen extraction. The ultimate goal of this work is to reduce the risks of stroke in patients with cerebrovascular disease. One current project is to determine the role of hemodynamic mechanisms in the risk of stroke for patients with moyamoya disease, an unusual disorder of the arteries of the brain. The aim of another investigation is to develop techniques using magnetic resonance imaging to provide similar regional and quantitative measurements of blood flow, blood volume and oxygen extraction that arecurrently only obtainable with PET. A final important project is a multicenter clinical trial of surgical bypass for complete occlusion of the carotid arteries, using PET to select patients at risk of stroke due to hemodynamic factors. My research closely parallels my clinical interests, which involves the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular disease. My clinical specialty is the endovascular (within the blood vessels) treatment of cerebral aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs)and fistulas, embolic stroke, and atherosclerotic stenoses of the vessels of the head and neck. These therapies involve tecchniques such as angioplasty and stenting, GDC coils, thrombolysis, and embolic materials (including liquid agents).
