QualificationsPh.D., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Epidemiology, 2000. M.P.H., University of California, Berkeley, Epidemiology/Biostatistics, 1995. B.A., University of California, Los Angeles, Geography, 1990. Expertise and Research InterestsDr. De Roos's research interests and experience are primarily in the study of occupational and environmental exposures to chemicals and radiation as risk factors for cancer, other chronic diseases, and intermediate biologic effects. She has conducted population-based case-control studies of occupation and environmental exposures as risk factors for childhood neuroblastoma, adult brain tumors, and lymphomas.
A focus of Dr. De Roos' research is in health effects of exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In a study (Cancer Res, 2005) of POPs in plasma as contributors to non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) risk, Dr. De Roos and colleagues found that certain moderate- and highly-chlorinated polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB) congeners were associated with approximately three-fold increased risk of NHL (comparing extreme quartiles). Each of the furan congeners they measured was associated with risk of NHL, as were total furans, with a significant trend across quartiles (p=0.006). The toxic equivalency quotient (TEQ), a summed metric that weights congeners by their dioxin-like potency, was associated with NHL, with 35% increased risk per 10 TEQ units. The results suggest that exposure to POPs, particularly certain PCBs and furans, significantly contributes to NHL risk.
In a new project, Dr. De Roos will investigate how PCB concentrations change during weight loss in a group of women participating in an exercise intervention trial, and how PCBs released from adipose tissue to blood during weight loss may affect immune function in these women.
Several of Dr. De Roos's studies are exploring the use of geographic information systems and historical geographically-referenced environmental surveillance data to estimate individual-level exposures. One project focuses on environmental exposure to industrial pollution as a risk factor for NHL, using data on current and historical industry locations, wind patterns, and census data. Another study focuses on air pollution in relation to immune function in the Puget Sound region, in collaboration with other investigators in the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.
