Expertise and Research Interests

My research interests include the following:
- Occupational and environmental hazards in agriculture:
1. Delivery of occupational health services to agricultural communities
2. Community-based interventions as a method to improve rural health
3. Respiratory disease of agricultural workers
4. Respiratory health effects of organic dust exposure and dust control methods
5. Agricultural injuries
6. Epidemiology of zoonotic infection in rural and agricultural workers
7. Policy
- Veterinary environmental health: Health and economic effects of the environment in livestock and poultry production;
- Control measures of the livestock environmental public health hazard of emission from agricultural production operations;
- Infectious disease hazards of humans (zoonotic and environmental);
- Comparative aspects of neoplastic and infectious diseases; and
- Environmental carcinogens (ingested asbestos relationship to bowel cancer).

I am currently involved in the following projects:
- A feasibility study and model of health insurance incentives for safe farming operations (certified safe farms);
- An engineering control for aerosolized particulates in swine buildings using an oil misting system;
- A clearinghouse for education and information dissemination of health and safety in agriculture;
- Development and implementation of a model occupational health and safety service for farmers: 'The Iowa Agricultural Health and Safety Network,' a network of 16 hospitals, clinics and county health departments;
- Tractor Risk Abatement and Control (TRAC): A policy process for community intervention to prevent tractor-related injuries;
- Revision of a series of booklets on agricultural respiratory diseases for the American Lung Assoication;
- Development and delivery of an agricultural occupational health nurse training and certification program;
- Assessment of exposures, health, social and psychological symptoms of persons living in the vicinity of large swine confinement sturctures;
- Production of a textbook in agricultural medicine;
- 'SHAUN': A project of family support for parents having lost a child to a farm injury;
- Expanding access to occupational health and safety services to the agricultural community;
- Development of an outreach-educational program in agricultural health and safety for rural health care providers; and
- Development of a statewide planning process for coordinated agricultural health and safety programming.
- Development of a new web based, real time, audio-visual distance-learning course in agricultural safety and health for students at the University of Illinois-Urbana.
