Qualifications

Ph.D., University of Minnesota, Zoology, 1979.
M.S., University of San Francisco, Biology, 1974.
B.A., College of St. Thomas, Biology, 1972.

Expertise and Research Interests

My current research interests focus in four areas: the evolution of the proopimelanocortin biosynthetic pathway in the pituitaries of non-mammalian vertebrates; the evolution of fish anterior pituitary hormones; the evolution of melanocortin receptors in cartilaginous fish and ray-finned fish, and the post-transitional processing of opioid peptides in the central nervous systems of vertebrates.

Foreign interests: Japan; Canada; Australia; France.

Other Expertise

Academic Experience:
Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award, 1992
I have had experience with the following funding agencies: NSF(F); NIH(F); NIMH(F)
Chair-elect, Division of Comparative Endocrinology, Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology

Future Research

My laboratory will be using MALDI TOFF masspectrometry to characterize neuropeptides and will be making more extensive use of real-time PCR to quantify the types of melanocortin receptors expressed in different tissues of the hornshark and sturgeon.
