University of Washington School of Public Health and Community Medicine Nutritional Sciences Associate ProfessorAppointed: 2008 | |
QualificationsPh.D., University of Tennessee - Knoxville, Education, 1997. M.S., Ball State University, Exercise Physiology, 1994. B.S., East Stroudsburg University, Physical Education, 1992. Expertise and Research InterestsResearch interests include: (1) non-biological determinants of physical activity and obesity (e.g., access, income, and the physical environment); (2) relationships among cardiorespiratory fitness, body fatness, and metabolic disease; and, (3) lifestyle interventions of physical activity and dietary modifications in the prevention and treatment of metabolic and cardiovascular disease.
Examples of current funded research projects include:
1. Effectiveness of a comprehensive intervention in reducing or maintaining body mass index in a randomized controlled trial of worksites (PACE). 2. Mechanisms by which energy balance modifies and influences the process of carcinogenesis (TREC). 3. Validity and reliability of an innovative multi-sensor board device for measuring physical activity type, amount, and associated energy expenditure under free-living conditions (MSB). 4. Develop and validate novel approaches to measuring energy expenditure and energy intake in real-time using the MSB integrated with a cellular telephone to provide continuous feedback on energy balance and the physical environment (BALANCE). 5. Evaluate the implementation and effects of the 5-for-Life physical education program in elementary and middle-school students over 3-years in seven school districts in a rural county (PEP).
Research affiliations at the University of Washington include the Center for Clinical and Epidemiological Research, General Clinical Research Center, Pediatric Clinical Research Center, Diabetes Endocrinology Research Center, Clinical Nutrition Research Unit, the Health Promotion Research Center, and the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Other ExpertiseI am a registered clinical exercise physiologist through the American College of Sports Medicine (RCEPSM). Future ResearchOngoing work and pending grant applications focus on physical activity and eating behaviors in twins.
I am interested in serving as a potential research mentor/thesis advisor to interested students (undergraduate/graduate/medical).
