Expertise and Research Interests

Infectious Diseases, Diarrheal Diseases, Tropical Infections and Travel Medicine

The major focus of my research has been to couple laboratory research techniques with application to population studies in the field to study acute infectious diarrhea. Most studies have taken place in countries outside the United States: Mexico, Peru, Egypt, Jamaica, Zambia, Kenya and India. A volunteer program was established in Houston to study enteric infectious diseases in humans where the emphasis or research direction has dealt with immunology and pathogenesis of disease. Major foci of the international studies have been on the epidemiology, immunology, clinical features, control, prevention and therapy of selected diarrheal diseases with public health implications. Major current interests are the pathogenesis and immunology of enteroaggregative E. coli and Clostridium difficile as well as host factors influencing susceptibility to diarrhea. Genetic susceptibility is a current focus of research. The occurrence of post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) following travelers' diarrhea is being studied. Multiple studies with non-absorbed (<0.4%) rifaximin in the prevention and treatment of travelers' diarrhea have recently been carried out.
