Expertise and Research Interests

Our current research interest focuses on the molecular biology of lung disease: in particular, the role of nitric oxide (NO) in airway inflammation. In this regard, we have recently discovered that the human inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) has the capacity to produce multiple isoforms through alternative splicing. Characterization of these splice variants have led to the identification of a domain in the enzyme that are critical for its proper assembly and hence for NO synthesis suggesting a potential locus for possible therapeutic modalities aimed at regulation of NO synthesis. Future work will dissect the molecular cell biology of iNOS assembly, trafficking and regulation. In addition, the functional roles of iNOS and NO in the lung will be examined in normal and in diseased states.
