Ph.D., Northwestern University, Neuroscience/Pharmacology, 1985.
B.A., Macalester College, 1978.

Expertise and Research Interests

I am a receptor pharmacologist with an interest in characterizing the interaction of drugs with their receptors and receptor subtypes and I discovered a receptor, which I term the I1 imidazoline receptor, which mediates antihypertensive effects within the brain while eliciting few side effects, this finding has been great interest to the pharmaceutical industry. I also use autoradiographic techniques to localize receptors in specific tissues and cell types and in brain regions with specialized functions.

A second area of interest is my work with animal models of obese hypertension. I have characterized a novel form of hypertension induced by repeated loss and repeated regain of weight, working most recently with a genetic, obese-hypertensive rat strain unique to this institution. This is potentially a very valuable model for testing antihypertensive drugs, antiobesity drugs and antihyperlipidemic drugs.

Future Research

We are currently examining the role of oxidative stress in the initiation of type 2 diabetes.

Industrial Relevance

We have characterized the leading animal model for metabolic syndrome and tested a number of different antihypertensive, lipid lowering and antidiabetic agents. Our interest is in the pharmacological treatment of nutriton-related chronic diseases.
