Expertise and Research Interests

I am a research scientist with training in human and comparative (including primate) anatomy, fetal pathology, and pediatric pathology, and physical anthropology. Since 1972, my work has been in the area of clinical anatomy, where I apply a variety of anatomic techniques to the study of clinical disease. I have served as a consultant to industry in several areas, including aspiration of foreign objects, product safety (bicycle helmets, toys), and diagnostic instrumentation (scalp oximetry).

I am particularly interested in the anatomy of birth defects (congenital malformations and deformations) and in the causes and mechanisms responsible for them. This has led to a special interest in congenital diaphragmatic defects (i.e., diaphragmatic hernia) and inthe craniofacial region. I am senior author of the one book on holoprosencephaly, a congenital disorder of the face and brain, and have served as an expert witness in this area; other areas of expertise include the growth and function of the oral cavityand tongue. Because of my interests in this area, I have served as an industrial consultant and expert witness in cases of choking (i.e., aspiration of foreign bodies).

My clinical and research interest in sudden infant death syndrome spans 18 years.
