Expertise and Research Interests

My current research is directed to the study of the mechanisms of anesthesia-related patient injury and the cost effective delivery of anesthesia services. I am currently involved in and past Director of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Closed Claims Project, which I directed at its inception in 1985. This project was initiated for the purpose of identifying the causes of anesthesia related patient injury and proposing strategies for their prevention. At the present time (2008) the database is maintained at the University of Washington and it contains approximately 8000 closed malpractice claims against anesthesiologists. Claims have been retrieved and analyzed from 34 insurance organizations which insure approximately 14,500 anesthesiologists in the United States.
To date, data from this project has played a significant role in the development of and the recommendations for standards of anesthesia practice which have been adopted by the ASA. This data base is the most comprehensive collection of anesthesia related malpractice claims in the world and as such is an effective organ for ongoing retrieval, review, and dissemination of information on anesthetic injury. The project represents a national quality assurance system encompassing the experience of over 30% of the practicing anesthesiologists in the United States.
Currently, I am an Emeritus Professot of Anesthesiology, and am developing a research program to evaluate the effects of the rapidly changing operating room environment on patient safety. The program's mission is to conduct research on the issues of cost, quality, and access to anesthesia and operating room services.
