Expertise and Research Interests

Research projects carried out in our Cancer Prevention Research Program (CPRP) at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (FHCRC) range from molecular epidemiologic studies to behavioral intervention trials; some use observational survey/data collections and others employ individual- or group-randomized controlled designs; study populations may be high-risk individuals for certain cancer, residents of rural communities, or ethnic-minority populations. As a biostatistician/epidemiologist in CPRP, one of my major research activities is to work with investigators to optimize the design, conduct, and analysis of these diverse projects. Parallel to the collaborations, my central research activity is focused on three areas: (1) breast cancer etiology and detection; (2) developments and applications of biostatistical methods for cancer prevention and epidemiology; and (3) leading the Statistical Center of the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study.

(1) Breast cancer etiology and detection:
A major focus of my recent research activities is on the etiology of breast cancer stratified by the joint status of estrogen and progesterone receptors. We have been investigating a new hypothesis on immunological etiology of breast cancer, in particular, in relation to delayed, or lack of, infection with Eptein-Barr virus and associated cytokine profiles and genetic polymorphisms. In parallel, we started an exploration of protein profiles in blood for biomarkers of breast cancer using a MALDI-TOF mass spectrometer. These reseacrh activities are in collaboration with Drs. John Potter, Paul Lampe, Janet Daling, Mary Anne Rossing, Kathi Malone, Jeannette Bigler at FHCRC and Drs. Nobuyuki Hamajima and Kazuo Tajima at Aichi Cancer Research Institute in Japan.

(2) Research on biostatistical methods:
As part of the National Cancer Institute's Early Detection Research Network, I am working with Dr. Ziding Feng and other colleagues at FHCRC and University of Washington for developing and applying statistical methods for biomarker discovery for early cancer detection. In particular, my current effort focuses on the analytic methods for high-dimentional mass spectrometry data in search of protein signatures specific to cancer.

Many cancer prevention research projects use group-randomized design. I am involved in a methodologic research project for group-randomized trials with Dr. Ziding Feng. My current interest is on the application of generalized linear mixed model analysis specifically tailored to group-randomized trials.

(3) Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (http://www.cancer.umn.edu/ltfu):
As the Principal Investigator of the Statistical Center, I have been collaborating with a large consortium of pediatric oncology researchers in the Childhood Cancer Survivor Study which follows over 20,000 childhood cancer survivors at 27 participating institutions in North America and investigates long-term effects of cancer and its therapy. The study examines many endpoints including the risk of second neoplasms, organ dysfunction, early death, decreased fertility and offspring with adverse events. Methodologic challenges include within-cluster correlation of outcomes, missing data, familial aggregations, nested case-control designs, and time-to-event analysis issues specific to long-term survivors studies.

Another area of my research interest is spatial statistics in application to public health problems. My recent effort in this area has focused on the collaborative work with colleagues in Spain (Dr. Joan Benach) in creating and analyzing an atlas of mortality in small areas.
