Expertise and Research Interests

Large-scale sequencing efforts, such as those that led to the human genome sequence, are revealing the existence of novel proteins at an unprecedented rate. A major challenge is thus to analyze protein function on a genome-wide basis to gain insights into proteins that bear little sequence similarity to those previously characterized in other organisms. Our laboratory has been developing analytical strategies that take advantage of properties of the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. One aspect of this work has been the identification of a large number of interactions among yeast proteins, including membrane proteins. In addition, we have been using S. cerevisiae to express proteins implicated in human disease to understand aspects of their processing or assembly, or to develop alternative drug screens. One disease of particular focus is malaria. Yeast provides a genetically tractable model for aging studies and we have been carrying out screens to identify new genes involved in this process. We are also interested in a new method to detect proteins, to identify proteins that function in a common process, and to identify proteins that function in recombination. We have also developed a novel biosensor for small molecules and a genomewide screen for DNA-binding proteins.
