QualificationsPh.D., Tulane University, Pharmacology, 1975. B.Sc., Pennsylvania State University, 1971. Expertise and Research InterestsMy research interests are integrative cardiovascular and renal physiology and pharmacology, with a special emphasis on hypertension. My laboratory uses whole-animal models to investigate long-term blood pressure regulation. Most of my research concerns the role of blood vessels, the sympathetic nervous system and the kidney in blood pressure control. Other interests are the renin-angiotensin system, endothelin and oxidative stress. We use pharmacological tools (and more recently gene transfer) in conscious animals to answer most experimental questions. Techniques include chronic instumentation of rats and mice for repeated sampling of blood and other tissues; radiotelemetric recording of physiological data in conscious, unrestrained animals; chronic hemodynamic monitoring; and hormone assays. I also collaborate with other investigators at MSU to evaluate cardiovascular, kidney and brain function at the cellular and molecular levels. A special research interest in recent times is how control of vein function contributes to overall cardiovascular homeostasis in health and disease.
