My research interests and current projects include the following:

Injury Epidemiology: Occupational and environmental toxicology and prevention.

Occupational Epidemiology: Occupational and environmental toxicology, particularly neurotoxicity, and asthma.

Development of an on-line syllabus and slide-text presentations for Environmental and Occupational Toxicology, and International Health.

Development of an Asthma Registry utilizing insurance claims data, evaluating prevalence and environmental and socio-demographic risk factors for asthma episodes in Iowa.

Epidemiology of motor vehicle crash injuries, part of CDC Injury Prevention Research Center project, evaluation of efficacy of “zero-tolerance” blood alcohol concentration laws in three Midwestern states and use of probabilistic linkage of crash and hospitalization data, CODES.

School-based injury prevention project, part of CDC Injury Prevention Research Center project.

Community-based tobacco addiction prevention project.

Occupational health consultant and educator to local industries and labor organizations – WORKSAFE IOWA project.

Assisting Indiana State Police in evaluation of epidemiology of ICU mortality in a community hospital as part of a serial-murder investigation.

Evaluation of the prevalence and causes of lead over-exposure and toxicity in the construction industry – NIOSH project

Development of educational modules on pesticide toxicology in collaboration with Iowa State Extension, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship, and Iowa Department of Public Health.

Evaluation of association between drinking water radon and radium concentrations and distribution system parameters – EPA project.

Epidemiology of work-related injury among university employees, using workers compensation claims data, part of CDC Injury Prevention Research Center project.

Development of occupational health surveillance systems and epidemiologic evaluation of health outcomes in Burlington, Iowa, atomic weapons manufacturers and expansion of these activities to Department of defense contract workers.

Modifying existing Iowa Legislative language regarding Workers’ Compensation Eligibility such as to not preclude eligibility for workers’ developing or being diagnosed with occupational diseases with a greater than one year latency after last documented occupational exposure
