Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Coronado is involved in research on health disparities and health promotion in the Latino population. She participates in several studies that develop and test innovative strategies to reduce the risk for cancer, or reduce exposure to environmental toxicants. Dr. Coronado is the Principal Investigator on a study that aims to test a cervical cancer intervention among rural Latinos in Eastern Washington. The project examines which components of a multi-component intervention improve the likelihood of receiving screening for cervical cancer. Dr. Coronado is a co-Investigator on second cervical cancer project that aims to test a promotora-based intervention to improve participation in cervical cancer screening among residents in colonias along the US - Mexico border. A third study, led by Dr. Coronado, is conducted in collaboration with Sea Mar Community Health Centers and examines Latino parents' acceptability of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for young girls. This study builds on a long-standing collaboration with Sea Mar Community Health Centers that began with the implementation of a clinic reminder system to prompt colorectal cancer screening for age eligible patients at the clinic.

Among Dr. Coronado's current community-based projects is Reducing Pesticide Exposure in Children of Farm Workers. This project is being carried out in the Yakima Valley. Farm worker and non-farm worker families were recruited to participate in a full-year investigation where in questionnaire data, urine samples, and blood samples were collected from adult workers and their children. Dust sample collection from farm worker and non-farm worker homes and vehicles was also undertaken. A second project aims to reduce the risks for diabetes among Latinos in a rural setting, by focusing on early detection and home-based education strategies. A final community-based study aims to reduce the risks for breast and colorectal cancer among Latinos in a rural setting.

Dr. Coronado has collaborated closely with Dr. Vicky Taylor on research that addresses the risk for hepatitis B (HBV) among Chinese Americans in Seattle and Vancouver, British Columbia. She was the Principal Investigator on a pilot project that developed an English as a Second Language curriculum that aimed to prompt screening and vaccination for HBV among individuals who had never been screened.

Dr. Coronado has a long-history of mentoring students, and is the Principal Investigator on a project funded through a collaborative grant with New Mexico State University, a minority-serving institution. The project aims to train underrepresented undergraduate and post-baccalaureate students at New Mexico State University to conduct cancer-related research.

Other Expertise

Dr. Coronado has special expertise in conducting bilingual trainings of health promoters.

Dr. Coronado is an active board member of CASA Latina and Planned Parenthood.

Future Research

Dr. Coronado's future research will focus on identifying innovative strategies to reduce disparities in incidence and mortality from cancer.
