Expertise and Research Interests

Summary of Research Interests:

I am the Associate Director of the Pediatric Perioperative Cardiac Arrest and Death (POCA) Registry. This is an in depth examination of cardiac arrests in children during anesthesia. Currently 300 cases have been enteredinto the registry.

Other projects that I am involved with include investigation of innovative methods and delivery of patient care. These include the utilization of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) for repair of complete laryngotracheal esophageal cleft and other tracheal anomalies. It also includes the development of anesthesia and postoperative analgesia programs for patients with cerebral palsy undergoing selective dorsal rhizotomy. In addition, I have been an active member of the Spasticity Management Program at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center as as a part of my
involvement there is investigating methods for utilizing intrathecal Bacolfen for the treatment of spasticity in children.

Other projects that are ongoing include an investigation of anesthesia related complications in children with upper respiratory tract infection as well as an assessment of methemoglobin concentrations in children who have received a 5% Lidocaine prilocaine cream (EMLA) and patientsalso receiving sulfonamides.

Clinical Interests:

All my clinical activities are at Children’s Hospital and Regional Medical Center in Seattle, Washington. I am an Attending Anesthesiologists in the Department of Anesthesia and Critical Care, and the majority of my time is in supervising and instructing residents and pediatric anesthesiology fellows as well as providing independent anesthesia care for neonates, children and adolescents. I have an expertise in anesthesia for pediatric and surgicalsubspecialties including general surgery, neurosurgery, otolyngology, urology, orthopedic surgery, plastic and facial reconstruction surgery, evasive diagnostic and intervention, cardiology, oral surgery, dentistry, oncology, gastroenterology, radiology, and
nephrology. I am also a member of the extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) team where my responsibilities include medical management during cannulation and for the duration of treatment with ECMO in a variety of critically ill patients. Asan extension of this, I have become one of several designated anesthesiologists for infants requiring surgery while on ECMO.
