Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine Medicine Infectious Diseases Associate ProfessorAppointed: 2006 | |
QualificationsPh.D., Johns Hopkins University, Clinical Investigation, 2004. M.D., Duke University, 1994. B.S., University of Notre Dame, Biology, 1990. Expertise and Research InterestsDr Lucas is an associate professor of medicine in the division of infectious diseases. He completed his M.D. at Duke University and a PhD in clinical investigation from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. He completed his internal medicine residency and infectious diseases fellowship at The Johns Hopkins Hospital. Dr. Lucas has devoted his clinical and research career to HIV since completing his training in 2001. His research interests include integrated care for HIV-infected drug users, adherence and improving treatment outcomes in disenfranchised HIV populations, and HIV-associated kidney disease. Dr. Lucas is PI on a HRSA SPNS grant to conduct a randomized controlled trial of HIV-clinic-based buprenorphine maintenance vs. referral to an opioid treatment center in opioid-dependent HIV-infected participants. He is also PI on an R01 from NIDA to compare directly observed HIV therapy (DOT) with self-administered therapy in HIV-infected individuals receiving methadone. Dr. Lucas is a member of the HPTN and is on the protocol development committee for HPTN 058, a large-scale randomized trial to determine if buprenorphine maintenance therapy plus risk-reduction counseling is more effective than detoxification plus counseling in preventing HIV seroconversion in Chinese and Thai injection drug users.
