Expertise and Research Interests

Current research interests focus on the epidemiology of Helicobacter pylori infection in populations of Hispanic children, specifically in Colombia and the Texas-Mexico border region. Research in Colombia has been carried out in collaboration with a binational team of investigators, centered in Departments of Pathology at both the Louisiana State University Medical Center and the Universidad del Valle Medical School in Colombia, conducting ongoing studies of gastric cancer etiology. A cross-sectional study of factors associated with H. pylori prevalence among children from the Andean region of Colombia was conducted in 1992. A study completed in 1996 assessed the feasibility of interventions designed to interrupt the transmission of H. pylori infection in Colombian children. With a team of researchers from the University of Texas-Houston School of Public Health and the University of Texas, El Paso preliminary studies assessed the prevalence of H. pylori infection in primary school children in El Paso County. Currently, this team is conducting a longitudinal study that follows infants in El Paso, Texas and Juarez, Mexico from birth through three years of age to observe the natural history of H. pylori infection and risk factors for acquisition, persistence and recurrence in this population.
