Expertise and Research Interests

Current emphasis is psychopharmacology clinical trials of medications for the treatment of substance use disorders. This includes examination of medications for treatment of patients who have other psychiatric or medical diagnoses concurrent with drug dependence; particular interests include ADHD-SUD and Pain-SUD.

The research includes consideration of joint actions of behavioral and medication therapies. Related research entails examination of behavioral-biological correlates of SUD including stress. The research is conducted in clinical and human laboratory venues. Ongoing work also includes collaboration with preclinical psychopharmacology researchers.

I am working with colleagues at the University of Minnesota Medical School at the Minneapolis (Psychiatry) and Duluth (Behavioral Science) campuses examining substance use disorders and co-morbid conditions. Current collaborators at the University of Minnesota include Mustafa al'Absi PhD, David Herin PhD, Marc Mooney PhD, Sheila Specker MD, Ken Winters PhD and Jon Grant MD. Previous research initiated at the University of Texas is being completed under the auspices of Joy Schmitz PhD.
