Expertise and Research InterestsI am a semi-retired faculty member at Centre for Environment [CFE]. During the last 35 years I have taught and carried out research in environmental and natural resource management with special emphasis on policy instruments. I have worked in Malta, Canada, Sudan, Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Trinidad & Tobago, Jamaica and Barbados, teaching and consulting on municipal water policy, environmental assessment, environmental curriculum design, risk management, environmental management and environmental/natural resource economics. In 1970-72 I taught Economics at the University of Malta and Geography/Statistics at the Malta College of Art, Science and Technology (later incorporated into the University of Malta). In 1972 I joined the University of Toronto as a faculty member in Geography and the Institute for Environmental studies [IES]. At IES I served two terms as Associate Director with special responsibility for the interdisciplinary collaborative M.A./M.Sc. program in Environmental Studies. I co-designed the interdisciplinary major in Environmental Management at the Mississauga Campus (UTM) and was the Faculty Advisor for this program for 24 years. My consulting experience includes projects with many organisations including Environment Canada, Environment Ontario, City of Toronto, UN Economic and Social Council, CIDA, IDRC, IJC, Canada/US Great Lakes Fisheries Commission, TV Ontario, Ford Foundation, Rockefeller Foundation, the Walkerton Commission, the Canadian Environmental Assessment Research Council and the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency. My scholarly output includes over 70 journal papers, chapters in books and research reports. I have authored, edited or collaborated in five books and three short monographs. I have made over two hundred presentations at conferences, workshops and panels, in addition to guest lectures in about 50 universities in four continents. I have supervised 28 Master and Ph.D. students and co-supervised/served on graduate exam committees at York U, McMaster U, University of the West Indies and INRS-Eau.
