QualificationsPh.D., Pennsylvania State University, Human Development and Family Studies, 1991. M.S., Pennsylvania State University, Human Development and Family Studies, 1989. B.A., Bucknell University, Psychology & Sociology, 1985. Expertise and Research InterestsInterests/Expertise:
Gerontology; Aging; Elderly; Epidemiology of Aging; Cognition; Cognitive Funtioning; Dementia; Alzheimer's Disease; Long-term Care; Nursing Homes; Assisted Living; Behavioral Problems; Delirium; Hip Fracture; Chronic Disease Conditions; Minimum Data Set; Rehabilitation; Longitudinal Methods; Data Management; SAS Programming.
Dr. Gruber-Baldini's research interests are in gerontology, cognitive functioning, and the impact of chronic conditions on functioning. She has worked on projects examining functioning in both community-dwelling and institutionalized elderly. Her research has examined the impact of chronic disease conditions on physical and cognitive outcomes. Both her doctoral and postdoctoral research have involved longitudinal studies that examined the influence of chronic disease conditions on cognitive and physical functioning over time. She has worked as a project director and analyst/statistician for studies on nursing home residents with dementia (including the University of Maryland Long-Term Care Project), as a research analyst for The Baltimore Hip Studies, and as lead analyst for the Collaborative Studies of Long-term Care. She was recently awarded a Task Order to study treatment and outcomes of dementia by AHRQ as part of the DEcIDE (Developing Evidence to Inform Decisions about Effectiveness) Network. She has also been the Principal Investigator of a pilot study that examined the cognitive functioning of hip fracture patients in the hospital and has a grant under review to continue this work. She is currently working on issues related to health outcomes of nursing home residents with dementia and examining treatment of residents with dementia in residential care/assisted living facilities. She is also examining measurement issues in long-term care, including measurement of dementia among nursing home residents and the utility of the Minimum Data Set for research use. Other ExpertiseDr. Gruber-Baldini serves as the webmaster for the Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine: http://medschool.umaryland.edu/departments/epidemiology/
She has extensive experience in data analyses using SAS, STATA, and SPSS.
Dr. Gruber-Baldini has also worked on a number of longitudinal studies, including the Seattle Longitudinal Study, the Baltimore Longitudinal Study of Aging, the Baltimore Hip Studies, the University of Maryland Long-term Care Studies, and the Collaborative Studies of Long-term Care. Future ResearchDr. Gruber-Baldini is interested in expanding her research on cognition and hip fracture to examine the relationship between cognitive functioning and physiologic/metabolic changes after hip fracture.
She is also interested in cognition in male hip fracture patients and in the role of cognition in rehabilitation outcomes.
