QualificationsPh.D., University of California, Physics, 1977. M.A., University of California, Berkeley, Physics, 1974. B.A., University of Colorado, Physics & Math, 1968. Expertise and Research InterestsResearch: Presently funded research includes balloon, rocket and satellite instrumentation relating to experiments in space physics and atmospheric electrodynamics. 1. Brazil Sprite Balloon experiment: NSF funded (ATM -0355190) experiment to make direct in-situ measurements of the electromagnetic environment of red sprites in the stratosphere of southern Brazil. 2. Equatorial ionospheric plasma irregularity investigation on the CNOFS satellite. Instrument is an optical lightning detector which is part of the VEFI vector electric field instrument (with R. Pfaff/NASA) (supported by NASA under grant NAG5-11675) to be launched April 2008. 3. MINIS Antarctic balloon experiments to study magnetospheric dynamics. This NSF sponsored experiment involved UW built instruments on balloons successfully launched from SANAE, Antarctica in 2005. Our instruments make vector electric field measurements. We launched 4 successful balloons in January 2005 from SANAE, Antarctica. (OPP-126028) 4. MASS (Mesospheric Aerosol Sampling Spectrometer: Electric Field Instrument) involved the successful launch of 2 rockets into Noctilucent clouds and PMSE (Polar mesospheric Summer Echos)from Andenes, Norway in August 2007. (S. Robertson, Colorado, is PI) 5. WWLLN - World Wide Lightning Location Network, see http://wwlln.net. We detect and locate lightning over the globe in realtime (only real time global lightning network in existence.) Service: 1. Chair, ESS Search Committee 2. Chair, Mindlin Foundation Seminar Committee 3. USRA (University Space Research Association) official representative from Univ. of Washington Other ExpertiseTeaching: (annually a subset of these courses): ESS102 Space and Space Travel, ESS 205 Access to Space, ESS471 Intro. to Space Physics, ESS515 Geophysics: Space, ESS 574 Atmospheric Electrical Dynamics, ESS 576 Space and Laboratory Plasma Physics, ESS577 Advanced Space Plasma Physics, and various seminars.
