Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Spallek is Assistant Professor at the Center for Dental Informatics, University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. Since 1994, Dr. Spallek's research interests have focus on the development of Web-based educational resources for dental professionals. Dr. Spallek developed and directs a predoctoral course on computer applications in dentistry. As core faculty member, he lectures in the NIDCR/NLM-funded postgraduate training program in DI. He published the first textbook on dental Internet applications in Germany (1997) and in the United States (1998). He is co-founder and a principal of S3 Web Technologies, LLC, an Internet services and consulting company for the dental and medical markets. Dr. Spallek is member of the Working Group Steering Committee of the American Medical Informatics Association. He recently received a NLM grant (G08) to build an Dental Informatics Online Community
(http://www.dentalinformatics.com/).

In his own words: "I started to develop systems which where designed under the broadcast paradigm which centers around the teacher, not the student. This one-size-fits-all approach resembles a mass-production idea in which 'you teach the same thing to students in the same way and assess them all in the same way.' (1) My current projects try to exploit adaptive hypermedia research in order to move to an individual teaching approach. This learner-centered education begins with the selection of a learning goal, the evaluation of abilities and the determination of the individual learning style in order to structure and tailor the offered material in the most efficient way. As foreseen by Papert, Seymour in 1996, 'In the learning environment of the future, every learner will be special. (2)'
