Expertise and Research Interests

Dr. Barentsz is Professor of Radiology and Chair for Research in the Department of Radiology of the University Medical Center Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He received his M.D. cum Laude from the University of Utrecht in 1980, and obtained his Ph.D. in medical research in 1990 on MRI of the urinary bladder. He is a recognized expert and well known speaker in MRI of lymph nodes and pelvic diseases as evidenced by numerous peer reviewed publications and invitations for presentations at most international meetings. His research focusses on "functional imaging", and includes body-MR imaging of oncologic diseases in general, with emphasis on tumor angiogenesis and tumor specific (molecular) contrast agents.

Future Research

Dr. Barentsz's future research focusses on new -functional- and molecular imaging techniques especially in oncology (especially prostate, breast, bladder, colorectal, and cervix cancer). He has special interest in new developments in magnetic resonance and contrast agents, and in the "fusion" of the new functional imaging techniques like dynamic MRI, MRS, CT, and PET. In his research, the additional value of the combination of these new imaging techniques on the treatment of the patient and on health care in general play a central role.

Industrial Relevance

Dr. Barentsz's clinical knowledge of new imaging techniques (especially MR) and new contrast agents can be of value to the industry.
