Qualifications

M.S., Michigan State University, Epidemiology, 2004.
Ph.D., Indiana University, Human Performance (Exercise Physiology), 1982.
M.S., James Madison University, Physical and Health Education, 1977.
B.S., Indiana University, Recreation Administration, 1973.

Expertise and Research Interests

My most recent research is primarily related to the effects of physical activity and exercise on the risk of chronic disease and other health conditions. Major foci include a) the effect of physical activity behaviors and cardiovascular fitness during adolescence, and the potential effect on development of cardiovascular disease in adulthood; b) physical activity during pregnancy and the postpartum period, and how this may affect birth outcomes. In short, my emerging research focuses on the epidemiology of physical activity.

I am Director of the Center for Physical Activity and Health (CPAH), which was formed in Fall, 2003, and is a joint Center between the Department of Kinesiology (my primary appointment) and the Department of Epidemiology (my secondary appointment).
