Expertise and Research Interests

Librarianship: Cataloging and Science Reference. Cataloging of Western language book non-book material, including audiovisual material as well as both paper and electronic theses at a major Midwestern state university. Previous cataloging experience in monographs and serials, with working knowledgeof a variety of Western European languages. Extensive cataloging of both electronic serials and e-books. Research interests include the impact of digitization on the retention of printed materials and archival records and the cataloging of digital art and realia.

Archaeology: Has completed several hundred Cultural Resources Management reports for project areas throughout Ohio. Special areas of interest include faunal analysis and identification of lithic materials utilized in prehistory. Expertise in historic archaeology includes 19th and 20th C. U.S. ceramics and historic clay tobacco pipes.

Geology: Chief interest has been the study of late Paleozoic invertebrates and vertebrates; also, stratigraphy of the upper Paleozoic in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, and West Virginia; the geologic occurrence of chert and other lithic materials utilized during the prehistory of this region.

Other Expertise

History: Ohio history, especially transportation, mineral industries, and communal groups, specifically Ohio canals, clay and coal industries, and the Jacob Beilhart "Spirit Fruit" commune.

Genealogy: Ohio genealogy. Has published numerous Ohio genealogical records, particularly covering the Hocking, Jackson, and Vinton Co. area.

American Literature: Ohio authors, particularly William Dean Howells and James Purdy.

Future Research

Current research includes: completion of a thorough bibliography of Ohio archaeology, to incorporate Morgan and Rodabaugh (1948) and Murphy (1977); ongoing study of lithic resources in Ohio and adjacent states; history of the Richard Morgan dismissal case; a study of Zanesville area novelty potteries, including archaeological findings; historic clay tobacco pipe studies; Ohio stoneware.

Industrial Relevance

CRM work is of relevance to any industries which require Phase I-III archaeological study prior to construction or alteration of existing sites.
