QualificationsPost-Doctoral Fellowship, University of Arizona, 1988. Ph.D., Texas Women's University, Nursing, 1985. M.S.N., University of California, Los Angeles, Nursing, 1975. B.S.N., Cornell University, Nursing, 1969. A.A., Concordia University, Pre-nursing, 1966. Expertise and Research InterestsMy research program, targeted towards children, adolescents and families experiencing cancer or other chronic illness includes on: (1) understanding the salutogenic (positive health) perspective of chronic illness by focusing on concepts such as courage, resilience, and quality of life; (2) understanding the trajectory of psychosocial adjustment; and, (3) developing and testing interventions to affect positive health outcomes. The major outcome of these efforts is the Adolescent Resilience Model (ARM) which serves as the theoretical foundation for interventions currently being tested.
Content expertise include: 1. Quality of life in children, adolescents/young adults, and families experience cancer. 2. Resilience processes and outcomes; These include expertise in related concepts including risk and protective factors of illness related distress, positive and defensive coping, spiritual perspective, hope, self-transcendence, family atmosphere, and peer and provider social support/connectedness
Methods expertise include: 1. Model generation using inductive approaches, especially phenomenology and a variety of concept analyis strategies 2. Model evaluation involving instrumentation and latent variable structural model testing 3. Decision making for combining qualitative and quantitative research approaches 4. Issues of research in behavioral oncology
Ongoing studies are focused on development and testing of interventions for psychosocial adjustment in adolescents/young adults and families dealing with cancer. Future ResearchTailored intervention studies based on profile-based approach to assessment of protective and risk factors to enhance resilience and quality of life.
