North Carolina State University College of Agriculture & Life Sciences Animal Science Associate ProfessorAppointed: 2007 | |
QualificationsPh.D., University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Animal Science, 1999. M.S., University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Animal Science, 1995. B.S., Iowa State University, Animal Science, 1993. Expertise and Research InterestsDr. Cassady has an 60% research, 40% teaching appointment. His expertise and research interests are in both quantitative and molecular genetic approaches to improve food animal production. His primary species of interest are pigs and beef cattle. Other Expertise- Application of linear and mixed model methodology - Linkage analysis and flanking-marker analysis to assign genetic markers to linkage groups and determine the location and effects of putative quantitative trait loci - DNA extraction, primer development, and application of PCR and gel electrophoresis - Certified radiation worker with 40 hours of radiation safety training - Anesthesiology and surgical techniques for swine Future ResearchNew applications in biotechnology are revolutionizing genetic improvement of livestock. Dr. Cassady's research program will focus on improving efficiency of food animal production using genetics. Both cutting edge molecular and traditional quantitative techniques will be employed.
In beef cattle Dr. Cassady is the leader of a multidisciplinary team whose objective is to improve the quality and efficiency of beef production through improved nutrient utilization. The team members have expertise in nutrition, endocrinology, and genetics. This research is currently supported by the American Angus Association and the Braunvieh Association of America.
The objective of Dr. Cassady's pig research is to evaluate phenotypic measures of pig behavior and to estimate phenotypic and genetic relationships among measurements of pig behavior, growth, and survival. The objective will be achieved by measuring multiple indirect measures of pig behavior and pig performance on hundreds of pigs of differing genetic backgrounds. Industrial RelevanceResults of Dr. Cassady's research will be utilized by organizations which provide swine and beef cattle seedstock to commercial producers.
